The 2017 lineup is
especially notable for the many and varied approaches to musical experimentation,
operating across, around and through the full range of established genres.
Prospective highlights
include outstanding French improviser and electroacoustic composer Jèrôme Noetinger,
visually spectacular Wellington ‘future primitive’ funksters Orchestra of
Spheres, Dunedin seismic rock trio BYG
(Alastair Galbraith/Robbie Yeats/Mick el Borrado) and Christchurch’s Teen
Haters purveyors of achingly
beautiful guitar/cello drones.
Hermione
Johnson returns with her wonderful
prepared piano, both solo and in the duo Drorgan
with percussionist Ben Holmes. Free-jazz saxophonist extraordinaire Jeff
Henderson also makes a welcome return. Auckland’s Rachel Shearer
brings her textural soundscapes to the festival, Christchurch free-noise godfather
Bruce Russell performs solo, and
Dunedin’s Eye add their improvised psych/rock.
This Lines of Flight will
be the tenth and the Friday night show will be held
in the recently re-opened Athenaeum theatre, the venue for the very first
festival in the year 2000. As in the past, many of the musical performances
will also include projected experimental films, bringing another audio-visual element
to the whole experience.
Tickets will be available
from the Dunedin Fringe Festival website. If you’re thinking of coming now is
the time to book flights!!
